How To Cope With
Maternal Cat Aggressive Behavior

mum and kittens

Cat aggressive behavior is sometimes displayed by nursing queens who are normally placid. Mommy cats are, understandably, very protective towards their kittens. If Mommy perceives any kind of threat, she'll go on the attack.

The best way to deal with this, if it occurs, is to leave Mommy and her kittens alone as much as you can when the kittens are very young. As they get a bit older, she will usually become more relaxed, and will be more likely to let you handle both them and her.

By the way, if your cat is fine about you handling her kittens, then you can start to do it, very carefully, when they are a couple of weeks old, as long as they're healthy. At first, only handle them for about 10 minutes at a time, and only under Mommy cat's supervision.

Handling of kittens is important in order to get them used to human contact. If you've not handled very small kittens before, you should take professional advice on the best way to do it, to make sure you don't accidentally hurt them.
