Cat Behavior Question - Cat Not Covering Poop in Litter Box

by Elizabeth
(Seatlle, Wash)

I have a new cat behavior problem - my cat suddently doesn't cover his poop. This problem just started within the last three days, and has happened twice. The cat is at least 14 years old, my family has moved to a larger home because they have a brand new baby. This has all taken place within the last three months.

Reply from Liz (Editor): Is your cat's behavior different in any other way? Is he showing any other signs of cat health problems that might make you concerned - e.g. excessive drinking, lack of appetite, weight loss, vomiting, excessive urination, lethargy?

If he does appear generally unwell or not himself and his not covering up poop is just one aspect, it may be worth getting him checked over by a vet to make sure he's OK.

He's getting quite elderly now, and it may just be that he can't be bothered always covering up his poop any more as his energy is lessening and he's slowing down. I'd recommend keeping a close eye on him generally and taking him to the vet if you're concerned.

Best of luck and thank you for your question.
