Cat Behavior Question - Why Does My 4 Year Old Neutered Cat Roll In Dog Wee?

by Maya
(Norfolk)

I am stumped by some very unusual cat behavior! The cat and dog have been friends for a long time but recently my partner saw the cat roll in urine the dog had just done. Is this normal?

Reply from Liz (Editor): I can honestly say I've never come across this cat behavior before! I think it is pretty unusual, unless lots of people start to tell me their cat does this too.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I think the cat may be doing it to put his scent over the dog's - in other words the dog has marked a spot with his scent and the cat is then putting his scent over the top of that - i.e. claiming the bit of "territory" as his own. This is an unusual way to do it - a more common way would be for the cat to spray urine - but if your cat was neutered fairly young it may be that he's never had an urge to spray.

Many thanks for your question. If anyone else has any ideas as to the cause of this cat behavior please reply in the comments section - I'd be interested to know what you think!

Not sure?
by: Maya

Not sure when my cat was neutered as he came as a two year old from the Cats Protection but I notice him spraying more. He even sprayed yesterday upstairs in the bathroom and this is unusual for him. He has never sprayed in the house before. I think another cat is terrorising him as he came home wounded yesterday and is in a bit of a state. Maya
