You'll notice on the cat age calculator above, the biggest differences between the rates at which cats age compared to humans is over the first 2 years of the cat's life.

A cat at one year of age is thought to be about 15 in human terms, as cats reach full sexual maturity at one year, whereas humans reach it at about age 15. At 2 years old, cats are thought to be fully grown and completely mature - the equivalent of a human in their early to mid 20s.

After age 2, a cat ages at a slower and more steady rate when compared to a human. For every year of the cat's life after age 2, one cat year equals approximately 4 human years. This is based on how cats mature - for example at around 10 - 11 human years most cats start to slow down quite a lot... This is when they're getting to about 60 years old in Kitty terms.

However, there are a few things to bear in mind when using this cat years to human years calculator:

  • Some cats mature more slowly than others - for example the Maine Coon cat doesn't reach full physical maturity until about 5 (human) years old
  • Different cat breeds have different genetic characteristics, and some tend to live longer than others as a result. For example, the American Shorthair cat is a healthy, long lived breed and can live over 20 years. The Himalayan cat is more prone to cat kidney failure than most other breeds, so may not live as long
  • The way a cat lives its life will affect the rate at which it ages. A straying, un-neutered Tom cat, for example, is only likely to live 3 or 4 years, whereas well looked after house cats stand a much better chance of living 15 or more years
